# The window, sidebar and composer

> The Omni Desktop window is the xpander chat with your computer added: the laptop status in the sidebar, the laptop strip under the composer, the menu bar, the quick prompt, and links between the app and the browser.

The window is the web chat, so everything in [xpander Chat](https://docs.xpander.ai/use/app.md) works the same. This page covers what the app adds. On Windows the app lives in the notification area instead of the menu bar, and says PC where a Mac says Mac.

## The laptop status

The sidebar shows whether this Mac, named there, is connected to your xpander:

| Status | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Mac connected** | Agents can reach this Mac in conversations you start from the app. |
| **Connecting Mac** | Connecting, at launch, after sleep or after a network change. |
| **Mac offline** | No connection right now. The app retries by itself. |
| **Mac turned off** | Your organization turned Omni Desktop off for you. |
| **Mac removed** | An admin revoked this Mac or it was forgotten in Settings. Sign in again to use it. |

## The laptop strip

The strip under the composer shows what the next message can use on this computer:

* **On this Mac**: agents can use your trusted folders. When the computer is offline, the strip says so and agents work in the cloud only.
* **Folders**: the trusted folders (**Trust a folder** while none is). Click to switch each between **Read** and **Read & write**, choose the [folder for new files](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/folders.md#the-folder-for-new-files), remove or add one.
* **Shell on**: agents can run commands here. **Shell unavailable** means they cannot, for example on Windows today.
* **Move to cloud** and **Bring back**: see [Move to the cloud and back](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/move-to-cloud.md).

While an agent drives the [Omni browser](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/browser.md), a strip under the title bar says so, with **Take over** and **Stop**. While a macOS permission that [computer control](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/computer-control.md) needs is off, the sidebar shows how many are off.

Only conversations you start or continue from the app reach this Mac. A message sent to the same conversation from the web runs in the cloud, and the agent is told the laptop is not available.

## Menu bar and quick prompt

The menu bar icon shows your account and connection, what waits for you, your trusted folders, **New chat**, **Settings**, **Open at login**, **Sign out** and **Quit**, plus **Stop browser control** while an agent drives the Omni browser. A dot on the icon means something waits for you, such as an approval or a question.

**Cmd+Shift+Space** opens the quick prompt anywhere on your Mac. Press Return to open the message as a new conversation in the main window. Change or turn off the shortcut in [Settings](https://docs.xpander.ai/desktop/settings.md).

## Open in Desktop and Open in browser

* **Web to app:** **Open in Desktop** in a conversation's or an agent's menu opens the same page in the app. Without the app, the web offers **Get Omni Desktop**.
* **App to web:** **Open in browser** in the title bar.

Web-only pages, such as the Platform, billing and organization settings, open in your browser.

## Source filter

Conversations started from the app carry the **This Mac** source, so you can filter the conversation list or the Task manager by it.
